Dr Justin Blows, BSc (Hons 1), PhD, MIP, FIPTA
After serving clients from within prestigious general law and boutique IP firms, Justin founded Phoenix Intellectual Property to provide responsive and individualised services that the big firms struggle to provide.
Justin is experienced in protecting a very broad range of technologies, including mechanical, electrical, information and communications technologies (ICT), mining, optoelectronic and photonic, water, and energy. He has serviced household-name multinationals, start-ups, universities, corporations and individuals.
As a registered patent and trade mark attorney, he has provided patent and design infringement advice used to stop his client’s competitors. As a certified patent searcher, he is able to develop deep strategic advice for companies operating in complex patent landscapes.
Prior to his present career, Justin co-founded and was a chief investigator of The Centre of Excellence for Ultrahigh Bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems at The University of Sydney, a highly prestigious and world leading research centre. Prior to this Justin was a project leader at The Optical Fibre Technology Centre, The University of Sydney.
In view of his expertise and leadership in research and development, he was invited to review papers for international technical publications, such as IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, and be a member of technical committees for prestigious international conferences such as the Conference for Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO).
Justin has authored over 100 articles in the fields of science, engineering and patent law, including the effects of Carbon Emission Trading Schemes on patent strategy.
He has addressed forums such as the Law Society, the Australian Solar Energy Society annual conference, and the Australian Institute of Energy, on intellectual property, been quoted by many news outlets including the Wall Street Journal, and has been interviewed many times on ABC radio regarding intellectual property issues.
He has been recommended by many of his clients on the public LinkedIn social network.
Justin has a Bachelor of Science degree with first class honours in Physics from The University of Sydney, a PhD in applied physics (lasers) from Macquarie University, and a Masters of Industrial (Intellectual) Property from The University of Technology Sydney. He is a Fellow of The Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys of Australia, and a member of the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand.
